    History
The immensely rich creeks and ancient river channels around La Porte were discovered in 1850. Not long after a party of men led by “One Eyed Moore” camped in a valley full of wild onions. Moore struck gold when he tested the creek and soon a thriving mining camp sprouted up. A rich quartz vein yielded over 00 in 1.5 hours, a nugget worth 00 was found and several others worth around 0 and this was with gold at /ounce.
Onion Valley’s population peaked at 1500 but was left a ghost town not many years after the boom times.
Still within that time huge quantities of gold were found. On Washington Hill (which drains into this claim) and estimated million was recovered.
    Geology and Gold Resources
This claim cuts right through the Sawpit-La Porte tertiary river channel. This channel was one of the richest of the ancient riverbeds in California and is estimated to have yielded million in gold with prices at /ounce.
The main method of working the old riverbeds during the Gold Rush was hydraulic mining. This was notoriously inefficient and these mines are estimated to have gold loss rates of 30-50%. The hydraulic mines upstream from this claim have added a lot of gold to the creek.
The claim has gold from three sources: directly from the ancient river channel, tailings from hydraulic mines, and erosion from nearby gold-quartz veins. These sources make it one of the richest claims available and new gold is continually being washed into the creek.
Panning, sluicing, metal detecting, etc will all work well here. There are gravel bars, bench deposits, and bedrock to work and enough material to keep a miner busy for generations.
This is a truly rare claim in the heart of one of the richest and most beautiful locations in California’s Gold Country. It’s a great asset that can hedge against inflation and provide a lot of fun to the individual prospector or a whole family.
